2. The New Minimum Scores (Effective Aug 7, 2025)
The government has raised the “floor” for English proficiency. You now need a higher level of fluency just to get your foot in the door.
A. For Student Visas (Subclass 500)
Previously, you needed an IELTS 5.5. That is no longer enough.

3. The “PTE Trap”: Why it got harder

- Under old rules: You could reuse that 2023 certificate.
- Under new rules: That certificate is expired for visa purposes. You must retake the English test before you apply for your 485 visa.
5. The Lifeline: IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR)
Finally, some good news.
In the past, if you scored 7.0 in Reading, Writing, and Speaking, but slipped to a 5.5 in Listening, you failed the whole test. You had to pay the full fee and sit the entire exam again.
As of late 2025, Australia fully accepts the “IELTS One Skill Retake” (OSR) for all visa subclasses, including Student and Graduate visas.
How OSR Works:
- You must take the original test on a Computer (not paper).
- If you fail one section, you can book a “Retake” for just that section within 60 days.
- You get a new Test Report Form with the updated score.
